Purpose of the Grant:
The purpose of this grant is to support the NAACP Monterey County Branch 1049’s Education Equity & Civil Rights Empowerment Initiative, a countywide effort to protect the civil rights of public-school students of color and promote fair, inclusive, and equitable educational opportunities throughout Monterey County.
The initiative will strengthen families’ ability to understand and advocate for their children’s educational rights, while addressing persistent inequities that disproportionately affect Black, Latino, Indigenous, immigrant, LGBTQ+, and disabled students. Particular attention will be given to exclusionary discipline practices, unequal access to academic and student-support services, inconsistent policy enforcement, and families’ limited access to clear information about their rights and available remedies.
By expanding civil-rights education, family advocacy, and community awareness, the project seeks to reduce barriers created by systemic bias and unequal access to due process, justice, and civic participation. Ultimately, the grant will help ensure that every student in Monterey County has meaningful access to a safe, supportive, and high-quality public education.
