Greetings participants of the Poor People’s Campaign (PPC) of Monterey County. Thanks to Anita Crawley, the tools used to collect input from you is attached. Also attached are agencies represented at our first meeting held on June 23, 2018.
We asked you to list your top 3 priorities. Many of you listed voter registration as a priority, among other priorities. The theme of the 109th NAACP National Convention was “Defeat Hate: Vote”. During these mid-term elections, it is imperative that we register as many people as possible. I recommend that we take this opportunity to saturate ourselves throughout the community to register voters. If we don’t vote, we can’t complain. I have personally asked many young adults if they are registered to vote. It was surprising to learn that many of them are not registered.
There are other priorities, as well, such as the upcoming Census count. The Census count is important because it helps the government determine how dollars are dispersed into our communities.
When we meet, we will discuss next steps. I will bring handouts related to Dr. King’s Poor People’s Campaign and a hand out of Dr. Barber’s Guiding Principles for us to consider. We can decide how we envision our work moving forward, come up with a monthly date(s) and establish sub-committees.
`Note that this location and date was chosen because the NAACP Youth Council will hold their 24th Annual Youth Summit. There will also be LULAC Youth Council participants, as well. Because the Youth Summit is held during the morning, it is a perfect opportunity to solicit youth to our PPC. I encourage you to bring others, as well.
